Five Kinds of Silence

FIVE KINDS OF SILENCE 23RD-26TH JULY 2025

Harrowing and claustrophobic, this unique and artistic presentation of Five Kinds of Silence describes the sickening abuse and torture inflicted by a father upon his family and explores the theory of Attachment, developed by John Bowlby, giving thought to how early relationships, particularly with caregivers, shape a Childs emotional and social development.

The play explores the impossible complexity of this family, deeply damaged by their life-long suffering and victims to a broken social care system. Written by Shelagh Stephenson and Adapted from an award winning radio play, Five Kinds was exclusively re-imagined for HOL Stoke.

The House of Lawrence used specialist immersive effects to bring this play into a whole new light, utilising a variety of in-house effects unique to The House of Lawrence Black Box Threatre.

Cleverly designed Pyrotechnics, Turbulent Wind Generators, Scent Generators that produced smells like rotting flesh & vomit and a rain pad that dispersed 600 gallons of water on to the stage, Five kinds of silence was nothing short of dramatic, shocking and true to the in-ya-face theatre it was born from.
